Together, the United Nations and Habitat, released their City Prosperity Index (CPI), which is a tool to evaluate urban development in order to create efficient strategies for sustainability and progress. It has been applied in over 500 cities around the world and was carried out in 152 municipalities and delegations across Mexico with the help of Sedatu and the federal institute for housing: Infonavit.
A prosper city is one where human beings fulfill aspirations, ambitions and other aspects
Intangibles of life; a place where they can find wellness and conditions to seek happiness and increase individual and collective well-being. The results of the CPI measure: productivity, infrastructure, quality of life, equity and social inclusion, environmental sustainability and governance. Nowadays, Mexico is the country carrying out the most initiatives worldwide.
The index analyzes and groups cities by their size and population. The more prosper and larger metropolis are those that reached an average of 52.9 points in Mexico. According to the size, the larger and more productive cities are:
- Guadalajara, Jalisco
- Monterrey, Nuevo Leon
- Culiacan, Sinaloa
- Tijuana, Baja California
- Mexicali, Baja California
The medium more prosper cities with an average CPI of 49.7 are:
- Pachuca, Hidalgo
- Cancun, Quintana Roo
- Oaxaca, Oaxaca
- Hermosillo, Sonora
- Chihuahua, Chihuahua
And the small but still prosper metropolis with an average of 51.2 points are:
- Tula de Allende, Hidalgo
- Guanajuato, Guanajuato
- Tala, Jalisco
- Colima, Colima
- Campeche, Campeche
By mixing all three categories, the list of the 10 most prosper cities in Mexico consists of a set of places that best answer to a set of specific living standards: civic, cultural, economic, political and social rights, which are:
- Cancun, Quintana Roo.
- Acuña City, Coahuila.
- Guadalajara, Jalisco.
- La Paz, Baja California.
- Tepic, Nayarit.
- Uruapan, Michoacan.
- Nogales, Sonora
- A tie between Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.
- Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
The conclusions of this CPI show that larger cities have more resources that allow them to act proportionally better to their population, but have greater pressure because of the size of their population. Medium towns may face some problems, similar to metropolis but they may lack of funds to attend them. Finally, the small urban areas, are found in an intermediate situation; they do not suffer great pressure, but their capital may not be proportional to the size of the population, it may be bigger
This project is helping the government to identify the needs cities have, as well as to implement precise actions to benefit the population like: being part of crucial decisions, create opportunities to encourage productivity, improve the environment, reduce inequality and exclusion gaps, build appropriate infrastructure, and generate the appropriate regulatory and institutional conditions to generate more prosper cities.
